13 Steps to Wash Your Car

1 Before washing your car, walk around the vehicle to inspect the paint, checking for dents, scratches, and heavily soiled areas.

2 Move the car indoors or to a location away from direct sunlight. Indeed, car shampoo, the water itself, and other products can react poorly, dry, and leave marks on your body. You do not wash a hot body when you are a professional.

3 While allowing the paint to cool, prepare all your tools for this cleaning session. Make sure to clean your tools and buckets with fresh water before using them, just in case.

4 First rinse the wheels with water (and remember to avoid touching the paint with water at this stage of the cleaning process to prevent water spots) and start cleaning the rims in this order:

  1. Apply a pH balanced wheel cleaner (so no dish soap) if it is too dirty.
  2. Start with the top and inside of the rim using a wheel brush, between each spoke, and work your way around the entire rim.
  3. Shake the dirt off the brake calipers using your wash mitt or better yet, using brushes.
  4. Take a sheepskin, microfiber, and/or chenille wash mitt to clean the front face of the rim.
  5. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the tire rubber (sidewall) if necessary.
  6. Use a soft-bristled brush to thoroughly clean the wheel. You can buy this great brush for €24 here:Or here:
  7. Rinse the wheels immediately with water.

5 Rinse the entire car with water, always starting from the top down and paying special attention to the bottom of the car, an area that gets increasingly dirty close to the road and wheels.

6 Cover the paint with foam, using a foam gun with your hose (or foam lance or foam gun) or with a manual sprayer like the Gloria Foam Master. You can also use the two-bucket wash method and apply the foam by hand using a wash mitt.

7 Let the foam sit on the body, trapping the dirt and allowing it to drop to the ground.

8 Use the foam gun or the wash mitt technique to lift the remaining dirt from the surface of your paint. Always wash in straight lines, not in circles (which helps avoid swirl marks on your body)!

9 Once finished, rinse with clear water from top to bottom, always ensuring that the dirt flows down to the ground and does not contaminate other parts of your car (cross-contamination).

10 Dry the paint with a drying microfiber towel. Prefer those dedicated to drying that can hold much larger amounts of water (up to ~5 liters for thick Mammouth towels).

Hydrating agents reduce the paint/microfiber contact by creating a thin layer to prevent scratches on the paint. This is known as a drying aid. It is often at this stage that slight scratches are created if the surface is not lubricated.

Some drying towels:

11 Use an air compressor (like the Master Blaster Sidekick) or a leaf blower to remove trapped water from mirrors, corners, crevices, wheels, and front and rear lights. Make sure the air pressure is not too high.

12 Finally, wipe down the inside of the doors and the door opening (don’t forget under the doors) with a microfiber cloth.

13 Apply a tire gel for a few minutes before driving if desired. Wipe lightly with a cloth if you need to drive immediately.
